Description

Written by Allison Fostveit, a parent of a child with autism, this book is her family’s response to the challenges she experienced when trying to explain the diagnosis to her son’s peers and her friends. Fostveit’s mother felt challenged as well, and did her explaining through illustrations. Fostveit added the words and, together, mother and daughter found a way to cope with her son’s diagnosis and share it with others.

A Boy Named Mac was developed by a grandmother and mother who were looking for ways to cope with a family member’s diagnosis of autism. The illustrations were inspired by the way this little boy found his way in his world. The book has been used in his classroom and other classrooms to foster understanding and friendships.

This book has been used successfully as a tool to help increase awareness, understanding and coping for families affected by autism.
